NSW Farmers welcomes investment in citrus

A new research centre in Griffith could help farmers adapt to the future, according to the state’s peak agricultural body.

Local NSW Farmers Horticulture Committee member Jo Brighenti Barnard said the $300,000 Citrus Centre of Excellence was a strong show of support for the sector, which had been hit hard by recent storms.

“This is great to see after the freak hail storm we had at the start of the year,” Ms Brighenti Barnard said.

“Some of our farms suffered huge amounts of damage and will take years to recover.

“It is good to see the NSW Government invest in locally-grown citrus, and support our farmers towards future growth.”

Nestled in the state’s south-west, Griffith is known not only for its fresh produce but also for its annual citrus festival, which sees locals build huge sculptures out of oranges.

Ms Brighenti Barnard said greater investment into the industry would further support local growers.

“More investment unlocks more opportunities for our farmers to thrive, unlocking more economic returns for the state,” Ms Brighenti Barnard said.

“Hopefully this will improve production practices and industry profitability right across horticulture.”
