Safer country roads a shared responsibility

NSW Farmers is reminding motorists to take extra care around agricultural vehicles with National Road Safety Week starting while harvest and sowing continues.

Large implements such as tractors and headers are a common sight on country roads at harvest time, and while the slow-moving vehicles can seem to be an inconvenience for some road users, NSW Farmers Business, Economics and Trade Committee Chair Bill McDonnell said it was critical to understand how to drive safely around these large heavy vehicles.

“Farmers need to use these enormous machines to get our food and fibre out of the paddock and into the market for consumers,” Mr McDonnell said.

“We appreciate that for some they can seem like a slow-moving hassle, but please remember no-one wants to hold up traffic on a country road, and we all want to get where we’re going safely.”

These large vehicles also have a large weight, Mr McDonnell said, and all road users had a role in keeping our roads safe.

“Unpredictable overtaking or tailgating is particularly dangerous around vehicles of this size,” Mr McDonnell said.

“Remember to look out, slow down and take care.

“Please allow plenty of time for your trips and give us plenty of space – we’ll try to get out of your way just as quick as we can.”
